How to add Attributes in OpenCart 3

Introduction

Product Attributes are intended for including additional pieces of structured information defining products. We believe that as a store owner you strive to provide as much information as possible for your products, improve your users’ experience and increase your sales. In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to create your custom Product Attributes in OpenCart 3 and how to assign them to Attribute Groups.

Adding Attribute Groups

Attribute Groups are suits that combine specific attributes with similar characteristics. Creating Attribute Groups will allow you to efficiently organize and structure your attributes. In order to add a new Attribute Group, please log in to your OpenCart Admin Dashboard and navigate through the left menu bar to Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups.

Accessing the Attribute Groups page

Under the “Attribute Groups” page you will see listed all default OpenCart attribute groups, in case they are not needed, please mark them all by ticking the “Attribute Group Name” checkbox at the top of the list and click on the red “Delete” button.

Once this is done, please click on the blue “Add New” button and let’s review how to create your custom group. For the sake of this example, we will create a “Color” attribute group and we will assign a few attributes to it in the next section.

When you are presented with the “Add Attribute Group” screen you will need to specify the following:

  • Attribute Group Name - The name of the group as it will be displayed on the storefront.
  • Sort Order - The value entered here determines the position of the attribute group compared to the rest of the groups displayed on the storefront. The lower the value is, the higher the group will be positioned.

Configuring the Attribute Group

After you enter the details, please make sure to click on the “Save” button in order to add your new attribute group.

Now that the group is created you will need to create the attributes which will be assigned to that group.

Accessing the Attributes page

Similarly to the previous example, on the “Attributes” page you will see listed all default OpenCart attributes. If you do not need them you can mark them all by ticking the “Attribute Name” checkbox at the top and click on the red “Delete” button.
